After months of violent battles that began with the Gaza War and intensified in September of this year, Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon agreed a ceasefire.
India has consistently advocated for "de-escalation, restraint, and return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy," according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which on Wednesday praised the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon."We applaud the declared truce between Israel and Lebanon. We have consistently advocated for de-escalation, moderation, and a return to the diplomatic and conversational approach. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs expressed the hope that these developments will bring about peace and stability in the broader region.
After months of bloody confrontations that began with the Israel-Gaza conflict and intensified in September of this year following the deaths of many Lebanese militant commanders, Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon have agreed to a truce.
US President Joe Biden's "involvement in securing the ceasefire agreement" was praised by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to Netanyahu's office, he expressed his gratitude to Biden over the phone for the US leader's "understanding that Israel will maintain its freedom of action in enforcing it."
Netanyahu stated that the "length of the ceasefire depends on what happens in Lebanon" and that the truce would enable Israel to "intensify" pressure on Hamas and concentrate on the "Iranian threat" prior to Israel's approval of the agreement.
What is the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire deal
Both Israeli military and Hezbollah terrorists would depart from southern Lebanon throughout the course of the 60-day peace agreement.
The United States and France mediated the agreement, which was announced Tuesday night after almost 14 months of conflict. Israeli ministers reaffirmed that Israel will continue strikes on Lebanon if Hezbollah violated the ceasefire's conditions, despite US President Joe Biden's assertion that the agreement is intended to bring the conflict to a permanent end.
The truce would stop the nearly 14 months of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, but it has no bearing on Israel's ongoing battle with Hamas in Gaza.
According to Lebanese health officials, Israeli fire has killed over 3,760 individuals in Lebanon over the last 13 months, many of them civilians.
