EAM Jaishankar meets with Deputy PM Gan Yong to commence his state visit to Singapore.

The External Affairs Minister focuses on innovation, ASEAN cooperation, and industrial parks as he fortifies bilateral ties with Singapore.

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar arrived in Singapore on Friday, November 8, 2024, as part of the second leg of his two-state visit. He met with Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong to discuss ways to advance modern bilateral partnerships, with a particular emphasis on areas such as semiconductors, innovation, and industrial parks.

Mr. Jaishankar shared the information on the social media site X, writing, "Meeted DPM & Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong to begin my visit to Singapore."

"The two leaders talked about advancing modern collaborations with an emphasis on industrial parks, green energy, skilling, innovation, and semiconductors," he shared.

Additionally, Mr. Jaishankar is scheduled to speak at the eighth ASEAN-India Network of Think Tanks Roundtable. Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam are all members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The Act East Policy is a manifestation of India's deeper and more complex relationship with ASEAN. In order to assess the strong connection between the two nations and look into ways to strengthen it even further, the EAM will also meet with Singapore's leadership. A tight bilateral relationship exists between Singapore and India. Since the beginning of the Look East Policy in the early 1990s, Singapore has been instrumental in reestablishing India's connections with the nations of Southeast Asia.

With around 9.2% of the nation's overall population, Singapore is home to a sizable Indian community. Mr. Jaishankar's visit follows Singapore's defense minister, Dr. Ng Eng Hen, who visited India for three days.

He and his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh co-chaired the sixth India-Singapore Defence Ministers' Dialogue in New Delhi while he was there. An essential ally of India's Act East Policy has been Singapore.

Singapore's Defence Minister Hen had said, "From Singapore's perspective, India has always been part of the East," expressing confidence in the two nations' ties. We view you as a member of the community regardless of your behavior or appearance.

Mr. Jaishankar is visiting Australia and Singapore, two different states. The External Affairs Minister spoke with a range of Australian social organizations during the November 3–7 Australian engagements in an effort to further the two nations' partnership. The strong and cordial relations that India has with the two nations are expected to be strengthened by Mr. Jaishankar's visit.
