PM Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the deaths in the hospital fire in Jhansi and stated that every attempt is being made to provide relief.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday morning condoled the loss of life in the horrible Jhansi hospital fire, where 10 newborn babies died in the children's ward. The prime minister further promised that every attempt was being made to provide relief and rescue by the local administration, which was overseen by the Uttar Pradesh government.

Late on Friday night, a terrible fire in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College killed at least ten newborns from asphyxia and burns.

Brijesh Pathak, the deputy chief minister, arrived in Jhansi on Saturday morning and reported that 49 children were in the ward, which only has 18 beds.

According to him, three children's bodies are still unidentified, while the bodies of seven youngsters have been identified. Brijesh Pathak noted that efforts are being made to reach their family members and establish their identities.

"Heartbreaking!" Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in an X post published by the Prime Minister's Office. It is heartbreaking that Jhansi Medical College in Uttar Pradesh experienced a fire tragedy. I send my sincerest sympathies to the parents who lost their defenseless children in this. I pray to God to give them the courage to face this enormous loss.”

The prime minister further stated, "Every effort is being made to provide relief and rescue by the local administration, which is overseen by the state government."

On the directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the government has announced ₹5 lakh as an ex gratia payment for the parents of the newborns who died, while ₹50,000 will be handed to the families of the damaged babies, according to the Chief Minister's Office in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the CMO statement, "the Divisional Commissioner and DIG of Jhansi have been instructed by the Chief Minister to submit a report regarding the incident within 12 hours."

Because of the extremely oxygenated atmosphere in the NICU, the fire, which is thought to have begun as a result of a short circuit in an oxygen concentrator, spread quickly.

To identify the cause of the fire and evaluate responsibility, authorities have started multi-level investigations. The Samajwadi Party, meanwhile, claimed that the hospital administration failed to notice a short circuit in the equipment on Friday afternoon as well.
